Proofreading

The pre-publication check to be safe and remain awesome

How can a proofreader help your work?

You have some form of text, right? One that you wish to share with readers either for marketing or educational purposes, or to bring a fictional story to life and spread joy.

Now, these texts are shared through different mediums and various forms, but what they all have in common are words and an aesthetic layout – and these are the two areas where proofreaders shine.

A proofreader can spot:

 Errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar (the mix-up of they / their / they’re; or stationary / stationery – familiar typos after a long day, aren't they?)

Inaccuracy and inconsistency in formatting, images and their captions (that duck in the middle has nothing to do with proofreading, though it's still spot on), and other tiny details that could’ve escaped your attention.

We help by polishing your text to the highest standard humanly possible before it is published.

When do you need a proofreader?

Proofreading is a pre-publication check, so it’s carried out before your text is presented to the public. That said, it is the last chance to catch any nuisances that might have missed your attention or been accidentally introduced during the typesetting stage.

What do I offer?

I offer proofreading and proof-editing services on

  • Word documents with Track Changes;
  • PDF files with commenting tools or with BSI proof-correction marks;
  • Paper manuscripts with BSI marks.

The difference between the above services? Proof-editing is done on Word documents, and works great with electronic publications such as ebooks.

Feel free to contact me so we can discuss your needs, and I gladly offer a free sample edit for a chapter of your book up to 1,500 words!

But do you really need a proofreader?

There is more to editorial work then proofreading: you can read about the different levels of editing in this article. But is it really necessary? Can’t a friend or a family member check your manuscript for typos?

The answer is, obviously, that they can: the more people read your work, the more insights you’ll gather. And yes, in the process they can point out typos or sentences that read wrong.

However, the review you’ll receive might not be as professional and objective as an editor's or proofreader's. Can they tell if the narrative viewpoint unexpectedly changed? Or would they spot misused dialogue tags? These are only two aspects from the countless points editorial professionals are trained to find and will point out to you – and we also do it to help, to make the most out of your manuscript as possible.
